The Four Directions
The Four Directions hold specific meanings that are commonly understood throughout the world such as West, North, East and South. They also hold values and are where specific helpers reside for those of us who are on this Red Road / Canku Luta. All of these teachings vary slightly depending on our personal relationship with them and who our teachers are. I will share a small part of what I have learned from my Elders. The following account is drawn from my personal truth, tempered by the wisdom gleaned from my elders.
An element resides within each direction. West is the Water (Mni). North is the Earth (Maka). East is the Wind (Tate) South is Fire (Peta).
Also, a Grandfather/Grandmother or animal helper spirit resides within each direction.
In the West reside the Thunder Beings, or Wakinyan who hold the power of the life force and are keepers and purifiers of the Water. It is taught that the Bear Nation, Mato Oyate also resides in the west.
In the north the Buffalo Nation, Tatanka Oyate resides. The Buffalo Spirit rose from the Earth to help the Lakota live in health. The White Buffalo Calf Maiden gave the Lakota the Seven Ways and the Seven Ceremonies to help them live in a good way.
In the East is the Elk Nation, or Hehaka Oyate. We pray in this direction for wisdom and rejuvenation.
In the South we look to Wamakaskan the Spirit of all of the Animals, and the Sacred Elders who have passed on; for this is where they rest. We pray in this direction for help and healing.
For each direction a color representing one of the Four Nations is set: West for the Black Nations, North for the Red Native American Nations (North, Central and South American), East for the Yellow Nations and South for the White Nations.
