I could use a hand
I came from a far off land
Before he laid down in his bed,
said my Great Grandfather, Ed
I lay me down before I sleep
I pray my soul for you to keep
I pray, Great Mystery, Great Spirit…
'Please help me, help you, help us'
My people are starving across the pond,
not for lack of potatoes,
did he and his three brothers run.
Not for fear to carry a gun,
but for fear that his family
would not carry on
The Troubles began
before the lack of food
They began when the Lords
chose to phuck my clan and my brood
Now it's time to have some fun
in a brave new land
Free to sing n pray
I could use a hand today
if you're in the mood
I pray, Great Mystery, Great Spirit…
'Please help me, help you, help us'
Always human
Not always humane
We do what we do
I could use a hand
I came from a far off land
Here to learn from you
I pray, Great Mystery, Great Spirit…
'Please help me, help you,
help us...'

The line in this poem,
"Please help me, help you, help us" by Brother Guy,
is borrowed from something he said in a sober meeting.
It came to him in a vision quest.
'The great American writer, James Baldwin said,
"In this world there isn't enough humanity as one would like. But there is enough."
Let us pray.'

When I think about our ancestors and the price that they paid to make it possible for us to be here and alive; my great grandfather, the immigrants and the refugees, the Native Americans… I have Clarity about their suffering, compared to mine. That’s what I think about when I consider giving up. In the end, I ask myself, am I authentic? Is my vision to honor them here in Ireland real or just an escape?
